The FMS

The FMS — Flow Management System — is the thinking half of Energy Autopilot. It works in the logical realm: inside the FMS, your home exists as a model — your solar array, your battery, your EV, your big loads — each an asset whose energy flows can be planned, shaped and coordinated.

What it watches

The FMS continuously takes in everything that should influence how your home runs: your electricity prices (including real-time wholesale prices if you’re on a dynamic plan), your solar production forecast, your battery’s state, your EV’s charging needs, and the rhythms of how your household actually uses energy.

The Servo

The Servo is the acting half of Energy Autopilot. Where the FMS works in the logical realm, the Servo works in the physical realm: it takes the assets the FMS manages conceptually and connects them to real-world control — speaking to your inverter, battery, EV charger and appliances directly, over your own local network.

Instant, in a way the cloud can never be

Because the Servo is in your home, it sees and responds to changes in your energy environment almost instantly. Cloud-only solutions physically cannot do this: every observation and command must cross the internet, through vendor clouds, with delays of seconds to minutes.

We started from a simple frustration: the tools for managing home energy either lock you into one vendor’s ecosystem, or ask you to surrender control of your own battery to a third party with incentives that are not aligned to yours. We believe that you, as the owner of your energy resources, should be the one that benefits from their optimisation.

Simon Hackett — Founder

Simon’s path to Energy Autopilot runs through three decades of building things ahead of their time — and each chapter turns out to be a rehearsal for this one.

The internet chapter. Fresh out of the University of Adelaide, Simon was part of the team that created AARNet — the first emergence of the internet in Australia — and, in 1990, co-created the world’s first Internet Toaster, arguably the first-ever IoT device. In 1991 he founded Internode, growing it into one of Australia’s largest privately held broadband companies — hundreds of staff, a quarter-million services, and a reputation built on network quality and customer service — before selling it to iiNet in 2011. Along the way: a seat on the NBN Co board and the Charles Todd Medal for contributions to Australian telecommunications.

Why we explain every decision

Ask anyone who’s used home energy automation and you’ll hear a version of the same story: “It did something weird at 2pm and I have no idea why.” Maybe it was right. Maybe it wasn’t. The problem is you can’t tell — and automation you can’t interrogate is automation you can’t trust.

Our answer is to make explanation a first-class feature, not an afterthought. Energy Autopilot gives you two views of its thinking:

A new website for the road to beta

If you’ve visited before, you’ll notice things look different. As Energy Autopilot moves from private testing toward a public beta, we’ve rebuilt the site to match: proper pages for how the platform works, which hardware we support, and how pricing will work — plus this news section, where we’ll post development notes and announcements.

The short version of where we are: the platform is running real homes on Victron Energy and SolarEdge systems, EV charger control is live, and more brands are in active development. The next milestones are expanding the beta programme and hardening the path to self-signup.
